Project overview
The redevelopment of the Octagon Theatre in Bolton combined substantial new construction with the careful refurbishment of the original 1967 building. The scheme retained the theatre's distinctive main auditorium at its heart while replacing and extending other parts of the venue to meet modern performance, audience and operational requirements.
Partial demolition created space for a new five-storey extension containing a studio theatre, rehearsal facilities and improved backstage accommodation. The retained areas were refurbished alongside the new structure, bringing together old and new within a live town-centre setting.
Front-of-house improvements introduced a new café, a larger bar and a multipurpose event space. Dressing rooms, offices and administration areas were upgraded, while new mechanical services and rooftop plant improved heating, cooling and ventilation across the venue.
The completed building provides better access and circulation throughout, a flexible 393-seat auditorium and additional spaces that support a broader programme of performances, rehearsals and community activity.
